Where to Spend Summer in Moldova

Summer in Moldova arrives slowly and stays for a long time. Days are warm from early morning, and evenings take their time to end. Somewhere in the fields sunflowers open up, and for a while the whole country turns a little more yellow.

A Summer You Can Taste

People rarely rush here. Talk to a local for more than a minute and you'll probably get invited to the table. Moldovan hospitality isn't for show, it's just part of how people live. And it almost always shows up through food. Summer is the best season for this: gardens give everything at once, markets fill up, and what lands on the table often grew there yesterday.

You can taste the season. Ripe vegetables, homemade wine, simple dishes with nothing extra but real flavor, the kind that's hard to find where food travels for days before it reaches a plate. Here it doesn't travel far at all.

And it doesn't cost much either. Moldova remains one of the most affordable countries in Europe, and a good dinner with local wine costs so little you don't even think about it. It's a rare combination: warm, delicious, calm, and cheap.

Where to Go During the Day

This is a season for being outside. By the river, in the forest, at a vineyard, on a terrace with a glass of wine after sunset. Old Orhei is especially good in summer, the water in the Răut river is warm, and you can walk down to it or follow the trail along the cliff for a view over the whole valley. Mornings are best, while the air is still cool and the light is soft.

The Codri forest starts nearby. In summer it holds real shade and cool air that's hard to find anywhere else at this time of year. Step off the path and it feels like the climate changes around you, even though you've only walked a few steps.

The village of Butuceni, right on the grounds of Old Orhei, is especially alive in summer. You can step into a local home, try homemade wine, sit under an old tree, and feel how everyday village life still moves here, unhurried and without a schedule.

An Evening at the Winery

Château Vartely is particularly lively this time of year, the vines are in full growth, the leaves are thick and green, and the sunset over the rows stretches on so long you lose track of time with a glass in hand.

Castel Unghern - Where to Stay All Summer

Castel Unghern stands right in the middle of all this, on the edge of the forest. The same hospitality, the same harvest on the table, the same warmth, just within the walls of a real castle. Summer is when the garden and terrace matter most, an evening outdoors, the warmth held in the stone, a quiet that settles in on its own once the day finally slows down. Seven rooms, a restaurant built on local food, and nature right outside the door, that's enough to make a Moldovan summer worth remembering.
