A limestone gorge, the Răut River, traces of civilisations from the Dacians to the Moldovan princes — all of it an hour from Chișinău. We explain what to see, what to do, and why it's worth staying the night nearby.

Orheiul Vechi — the place where everyone lived

Old Orhei is not one attraction but layers of history stacked on top of each other. In this bend of the Răut River, Dacian tribes, the armies of the Golden Horde, Moldovan princes and Orthodox monks have all left their mark. Each came here for their own reason — and each stayed.

The limestone gorge is itself a geological rarity in Moldova. Cliffs, river curves, caves that served as dwellings long before they became monastic cells. Below — the village of Butuceni, where people still live today, where you can enter a local home and try homemade wine.

This place changes depending on the time of day. In the morning — mist over the river and a complete absence of people. During the day — tour groups and activity. In the evening — a sunset over the valley that is worth a trip in its own right.

What to do at Old Orhei — activities

Horseshoe Trail — a hiking trail along the cliff above the Răut, about 6 km. Marked, with signs in English. On the route — a viewpoint with a panorama of the entire valley. The walk takes one and a half to two hours. One of the best trails for photos in Moldova.

Kayaking on the Răut — 16.5 km through the limestone gorge. The river is calm; the route is suitable even for beginners. Equipment can be rented on site; time on the water is 5–6 hours.

The village of Butuceni — a living village right on the territory of the complex. Here you can try homemade wine, buy honey and see what Moldovan rural life looks like without any staging.

Where to stay near Old Orhei

Most tourists come here for a few hours and return to Chișinău. But it's precisely in the evening and early morning that this place truly reveals itself — when the tour groups leave and only the river, the cliffs and the sky remain.

10 minutes from here, in the village of Ivancea, stands Castel Unghern — a castle-hotel on the edge of the Codru forests. Seven rooms — Grape, Napoleon, Wolf, Esenin, Stefan cel Mare, Rose, Sparrow — each with its own character. A restaurant where Moldovan recipes meet European cuisine. Full autonomy — their own sun and water.

Arriving at Old Orhei in the afternoon, walking the trails, having dinner at the castle in the evening — and returning in the morning when there's no one there. That's a completely different Orheiul Vechi.

How to get to Old Orhei from Chișinău

By car — about 60 km, approximately 1 hour. The road goes through Orhei; navigation leads you directly.

Castel Unghern is on the way — 40 km from Chișinău. You can stop at the castle first, drop your bags and head to Old Orhei unencumbered.

Old Orhei has stood here for more than seven centuries. It's not going anywhere. But available rooms at the neighbouring castle fill up quickly. Book a night and see Orheiul Vechi the way few people do — at dawn, in silence.
