Why Saharna is one of the most visited places in the country
Saharna draws even those with no interest in religious tourism. It is a vast natural and historical complex where two entirely different worlds coexist peacefully.
On one side: a quiet, well-kept monastery with bright churches and springs of fresh water. On the other: wild forest with rocky trails.
People come here to switch off, walk in fresh air, see Moldova from a bird's-eye view, and touch the mysteries that have been held in these rocks for centuries.
The mystery of Saharna — a footprint pressed into stone
The best-known story here is tied to the high cliff called Grimidone, which towers above the entire complex.
According to legend, a monk hermit prayed alone in the dark until one night he saw a luminous figure of the Mother of God on the summit of the cliff.
At dawn he climbed up and found on the solid rock a clear imprint of a human foot — as though the stone had melted beneath her step.
Today a small chapel stands above the spot. Every visitor climbs to see it — for the legend and for the breathtaking panoramic view of the whole monastery below.
From stone cells to an iconic destination
Saharna's story began long before the present churches were built. Already in the early Middle Ages, hermit monks came to these parts in search of complete solitude.
They carved their dwellings and small chapels by hand into the soft limestone. They lived in these rock caves year-round. The above-ground monastery appeared much later — in the 18th century.
The place remarkably survived the Soviet period, when many monasteries across the country were closed, and today remains the main spiritual and natural centre of the region.
What to see in Saharna in one visit
The Holy Trinity Monastery — the main above-ground complex with fine architecture, surrounded by flowers and greenery.
The cave skete — the ancient hermit cells where the spirit of medieval monastic solitude still lingers.
The waterfall cascade — a forest path leads to several waterfalls. The largest forms a deep pool beside which it stays cool even in the height of summer.
The Grimidone cliff — a viewing platform with the famous footprint in stone, offering the best angle for panoramic photographs.
