Why Curchi is called the most beautiful monastery in the country
Curchi stands in the forests of Orhei district. Five churches built in different eras — from the 18th to the end of the 19th century. Each looks different from the last, and together they resemble a small town that grew of its own accord over two centuries. It has been listed as a protected monument, and its reputation as the most beautiful monastery in the country has held ever since the first stone church was built.
People come here not for religious tourism — but for the silence, the beauty, and the feeling of a place that has outlasted everything and is still standing.
The legend — how a robber founded a monastery
The most famous story about Curchi begins not with prayer but with a crime. A band of robbers led by one Iordake Kurki had long ruled these forests.
One evening they ambushed two travellers on the road and killed them both. When they searched the bodies, Iordake recognised his own parents.
After that he gave his land for a hermitage, took his vows, and became a monk. Some of his men followed him. In 1773 the monastery that is today considered the country's finest came into being.
Historians debate whether this is fact or legend — but it is the story everyone who has been here tells.
250 years of history — from a wooden chapel to UN patronage
The first structure on this site was a small wooden church, around 1775. Thirty-five years later came the first stone church — the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God with its tall bell tower. Then a second. Then a third. By the end of the 19th century the site held a full ensemble of five churches.
In 1958 the Soviet authorities closed the monastery. Three years later a psychiatric and addiction hospital opened on the grounds. It operated here for 40 years, until 2002.
During that time the buildings were never repaired, even though the monastery was nominally listed as a state-protected monument.
The decision to revive the monastery was taken in 1992, but real work only began in the 2000s after the UN took it under its patronage. The restoration is still ongoing.
What to see at Curchi
Five churches — each with its own character. The main one is the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God with its bell tower, visible from a distance. The winter Church of Saint Dmitry is light and tall inside. The other three are woven into the general complex and complete the picture.
The grounds — the monastery is surrounded by forest. Inside: old courtyards, a pond, a gatehouse with arched entrance. Photogenic without effort — a phone is enough.
Silence — people come here not so much to look as to simply be. No crowds, no noise, no souvenir stalls. Just a place that has stood here for 250 years.
